Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, a Pakistani politician, was sworn in as the latest prime minister of Pakistan just before the country celebrates Independence Day on August 14. He was elected by Pakistan’s National Assembly getting 221 votes to become the inheritor to the expelled Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Mr Abbasi is a follower of the governing party, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.
Abbasi was born in Karachi in the year 1958 & has received his initial education from Karachi. He later joined Lawrence College in Murree, Rawalpindi. He graduated in electrical engineering from George Washington University. During 1980 he worked in the U.S. for some year & later moved to Saudi Arabia to work in oil and gas industry.
Abbasi returned to his country when he lost his father Mr Khaqan Abbasi during 1988 & joined politics. According to Dawn newspaper, in 1988 he fought election independently & won from Rawalpindi. In 1990, he was chosen as Parliamentary Secretary for Defence after being reappointed to the National Assembly.
In 1993, in the new round of election Abbasi fought for a seat of National Assembly as a candidate of the PML (N) & was re-elected again by the population & was appointed as the Chairman of the Standing Committee of National Assembly on Defence.
In 1997, during the parliament election, Abbasi again tasted the victory as a candidate of PML (N) & won from Rawalpindi. He was chosen as chairman of the Pakistan International Airlines during this year by then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. However, this role ended soon after General Pervez Musharraf ousted Nawaz Sharif & became the Prime Minister.
He served jail for 2 years for refusing a testimony against Nawaz Sharif in the Plane Hijack controversy.
IN 2002 General elections, Abbasi was defeated for the first time while contesting as PML (N) candidate; after which, he detached himself from politics and concentrated on Airblue Limited, a budget career in Pakistan which he formed in 2003. He worked as its first chairman till 2007.
In the general election of 2008 which happened after Nawaz Sharif’s return from exile, Abbasi returned to the politics with a victory & secured highest amount of seats as a candidate of PML (N). This success won him the Cabinet Ministry as the Minister for Commerce.
In 2013’s general election Abbasi retained his seat in National assembly & was selected as the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Resources.
The PML (N) voted Abbasi as its candidate to be the successor of the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif after he was barred by the Supreme Court on the basis of the corruption charges.
